up to 50 Mbps?

Hello,
I'm new here (...and in the country :D)
I was studying what internet provider here in Brussels and edpnet seems good. Unill yesterday I've seen that the description of the VSDL offer was 30Mbps dwn and 6Mbps up, today I see 50Mbps in dwn!
Is this a real change? Anyone has been upgrated?

I see from a neighbor that his belgacom connection is at 20Mbps, if I'm correct I don't have any hope to reach the maximum of 50Mbps right?

merci

Check http://userbase.be/nieuws/telecom/883-e ... t-50-mbps-

The 50 Mbps-upgrade is instantly available for new customers. Excisting customers will gradually be upgraded. Edpnet uses DLM to check if the VDSL2 lines are good enough to sustain 40 or 50 Mbps profiles. (DLM checks distance to the ROP/cabinet, attenuation, and stability)

thank you,
now it remain to discover if at my apartment I can archive that speed...
I presume I have to be at least at less then 400m from the box.
Is there an existing map of the network or could I see some properties on the belgacom VDSL (db value) ?

Indeed. The maximum distance is 400 meters and the attenuation can not be more than 0,4 dB.

If you have VDSL2 at the moment, you can use VDSL Modem Tool. http://hierzo.net/ (VDSLTools -> VDSL2 tool) You can post the results on the forum here (screenshot f.e.)

If you don't have VDSL, you can check on the belgacom website http://www.belgacom.be/bwt/Login.action ... _locale=nl Fill in your homeadress etc.

If you can receive 3 HDTV's, you're eligible for a 30 Mbps profile (requirement for 40 or 50 Mbps profile)

aaah, that's too bad. :(

Where I live, I only have 16,5 Mbps, so it can be worse you know... not that this helps you.

Bad luck, your line will not qualify for the upgrade to 50 mbps.
However, never panic ....
I'm sure that the next step will be to apply DLM also on the 20 mbps lines, which may result in a speed increase to 30/2 or even 40/2 (my best guess).

What's DLM ?
You can answer in french :D
Thanks

Hi, welcome in Belgium.

Well for your internet access the thing to know is that the speed of your connection depends on the distance between your home and the connection point of the provider.

So if your neighbor is at 20 mbps you'll probably have the same speed.

Thank you for all the answers, lets see if they will improve a little with DLM in the next months

Your line will be easely upgraded to 50 mpbs with DLM
Unfortunately DLM is capped up to 50 mbps (otherwise you would get 73 mbps) :D.

I am already on 50 mpbs  :

ok apart from the line sync, real download and upload test confirm there is enough bandwidth from the provider?

As for all providers, EDPNet uses a reasonable overbooking in purchasing Internet bandwith. Not all their users are simultaneously downloading at the highest speed (and providing such bandwiths would not be affordable).
However, they monitor very closely bandwith usage, and dynamically purchase extra bandwith as soon this is needed (e.g. a few heavy downloaders in one region > increase bandwith to that region).

Contrary to other ADSL/VDSL providers, EDPNET does not cap speed at the BAS (on PPPoE). Therefore your Internet speed is equal to your sync speed.

Speedtest example of a EDPNet user (posted on the Dutch speaking Forum Userbase):

DLM = dynamic line management
see explanation in the first post here: http://forum.adsl-bc.org/viewtopic.php?t=77708&start=0

Depending the distance/attenuation rules, lines are initially provisioned to a 30/6, 20/2, 16.5/2 or 12/1 profile (system called "DARE")

DLM is a system, that monitors your line during a number of days (up to 7 days). Depending the line quality, your line speed is gradually increased to 40 mpbs or 50 mbps. Hence DLM 'overwrites" the intially assigned DARE profile. As soon as your line starts to be unstable, speed is reduced again (highest speed possible still ensuring stability of the connection).

Curently, this new system is only rolled out on the 30 mpbs profiles.

The downside of this "dynamic" system is that, if you "play around" too much with your modem (multiple disconnects, resets, FW upgrades ...), DLM will consider this as a "unstable" line, and will reduce your sync.

I hope that the upgrade to 50 MBit will happen soon ;-)

Above report shows some strange numbers:

Based on the attenuation (3.3 db) you seem to be very close to the ROP (confirmed by the "estimated" line lenght).

However, your SNR seems much too low for this line lenght. Increasing your speed to 50mbps will result in a borderline low SNR (close to the modem max). Hence I would be surprised if DLM will put you on 50mbps (realistically you may end up at 40 mbps).

You should check your internal cabling (starting from the entry point up to where the modem is connected), making sure your installation is conform the rules, and you do not have any stubs ...
