Same problem here, and I also found
this user and
this user with the same noise complaint.
Sent a mail to Telenet helpdesk and got a call back from a service desk engineer within a half an hour. (Props for response time.)
- He does not have this type of modem model at hand, and seemed to lack hands-on experience with it.
- Based on the info he got from his team coach, he said the modem should not make such noise and even mentioned the device not have fan-cooling in place.
(I am 100% certain that the sound is actually
fan noise! It's extremely obvious if you spend just a couple of minutes with the device, power cycle it, and just listen to the behaviour.)
- He didn't dispute my remark. Just said that this is the info he got from his team coach and that he didn't have all technical details about the hardware himself.
- They would normally advise to exchange the modem for another one (same type), but:
- He confirmed already getting several similar complaints. This confirms the suspicion that it's inherently related to this modem type (and that it does contain fans
).
- He said I probably shouldn't hope for a firmware fix. Thinks that if it's indeed a general CH8568LG thing, that they'd probably rather bring out a new hardware model with low-noise cooling than fixing this model via updated software.
- He said that my suggestion of going to a Telenet dealer and exchange for an older / silent model was possible.
This was actually my plan B, but seems like I have no other choice.
